On Wednesday, the quality of life in Delaware will improve noticeably because every restaurant and bar in the state will become smoke-free. People will be able to work and relax in an environment free of the benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and 4,000 other chemicals secondhand smoke spews into the air.

Where, oh where do I start????

I guess at the bottom!!!

Stanton A. Glantz is a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Gee whiz, get a PhD in mechanical engineering and they make you a professor of medicine - WOW!!!!!

I'm sure the millions upon millions in research grants he brings to UCSF for anti-tobacco research has nothing to do with his position?

He did the first objective research demonstrating that tobacco industry claims that smoke-free laws hurt the hospitality industry are false.

OBJECTIVE??????? when it comes to anti-smoker propaganda is there is absolutely NOTHING objective about this person. Beating up the Tobacco Industry and smokers is how this earns it's living.

But anything that promotes the anti-smoker agenda of the Wilmington News Journal is, in their opinion, objective.

Hey, sheLion - I need your wonderful PING list!!!!!!!!

Based on the experience in California and other places that have implemented smoke-free policies, people will be happy and the hospitality business will probably improve.

This dude is delusional.

But that truth will not stop Big Tobacco from blowing smoke.

It is so obvious this guy knows nothing about the state of Delaware. Big Tobacco, to use his words - hasn't lifted a hand about this entire issue.

Sorry - I've been railing against this guy for so many years that I simply forget that there are people unfamiliar with him.

Long story short - he is basically the "dean" of the anti-smoker movement. He makes a tremendous amount of money demonizing the Tobacco industry as a whole and smokers in particular.

I'm pinging MaxMcGarrity because I believe he has, more available than I, a direct quote from Glantz that in essence says the anti-smoker movement is what helps people like him pay their mortgages.

Hope this helps.

As a matter of fact I do. This identical screed was printed in the other Delaware paper last week and while they do not put their opinion pages online, they do provide email addresses when available.

According to the Delaware State News - he can be reached at
glantz@medicine.ucsf.edu.

As to lies - I'll be getting into a few of the more blatant ones in forthcoming posts!!!!

While the people of Delaware will be big winners, there will be one big loser when the smoke-free law goes in to effect: Big Tobacco.

How do they figure the big loser will be Big Tobacco? Big Tobacco will go on selling. It's the smokers in Delaware that will suffer. Not Big T!

Smokers will continue to smoke. Maybe not in their old hang-outs, spending money. But they will still smoke.

How this idiot thinks Big T will be the big Loser is beyone me! Idiot!

Good, I'm glad.

Further proof the man has never set foot in Delaware:

People will be able to work and relax in an environment free of the benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and 4,000 other chemicals secondhand smoke spews into the air.

What about all the above mentioned chemicals, not to mention probably more than 4,000, that no Delawarean can escape just walking outside their door every day. He forgets one of the nicknames of this state is "Chemical Capitol of the World." Chemical plants and refineries are so good for the air we breathe, especially those not called on the carpet for repeated violations of emissions.

I live smack dab in between Interstate 1 and the most heavily trafficed road mergers in the state - less than half mile either way - but my life will noticeably improve on Wednesday because the guy next to me at the bar can't light up???

I live less than a mile from the runways of Dover Air Force Base and directly in a flight pattern, but my life will noticeably improve because someone can't light a cigarette after dinner in a restaurant?

I live 1 mile south of Dover Downs where 2 NASCAR weekends are held annually, races that turn this city of 35,000 into a parking lot of more than 100,000 additional vehicles - but my life is going to improve because those race fans can't light up when they go into Dover Downs' casino??????

Cut me a VERY large break.

Poor Stanton.

He gets more and more shrill as his panic sets in.

As my dearest friend says, "I can take it up to here (hand to top of forehead); but now I'm drownin'."

The drownin's begun; and lo and behold - there's Stanton opening up the floodgate.

How this idiot thinks Big T will be the big Loser is beyone me!

It all goes to the pack of lies he is spouting in this piece. another example:

That's why Big Tobacco working through its allies and front groups in the hospitality industry including the Delaware Restaurant Association (which finally shifted from opposition to neutral after it saw the Legislature was going to pass the law anyway). Big Tobacco did everything it could to stop Delaware's smoke-free law from passing and even tried to get it repealed in the closing days of the legislative session.

First, the tobacco industry stayed out of the ban issue altogether - they were more concerned about an increase in taxes. Second, the Delaware Restaurant association is and has always been an arm of the Chamber of Commerce. Third, the DRA backed down from their opposition to the ban once the race tracks and their restaurants and casinos were included in the ban. Fourth, the moves in the waning days of the legislative session to make changes to the ban had nothing to do with tobacco industry and everything to do with a political double cross perpetrated upon Republicans in one chamber of the Legislature by DemoncRATS in the other chamber.

Good Grief - He writes 2 sentences and I've shown 4 lies in them. I'm in delaware - he's not. I know what is going on, because I make a point of knowing what is going on, and have been doing so for the 20 years I've lived here. he doesn't have a clue.

He doesn't MAKE enough money to reimburse the business's for their loss of revenue once this ban kicks in!

He gets more and more shrill as his panic sets in.

Oh yes, he surely does!!!!!!

The gaming industry followed the well-worn tobacco industry strategy by commissioning a survey that said smoke-free hospitality would cost Delaware $57 million.

This baby needs a new pacifier.

Dover Downs had the work done - and considering even the state backs up the information from Dover downs that 79% of their revenue comes from the slot machines in the smoking section, to dismiss out of hand these figures is foolhardy.

Well over 50% of the patrons of Dover Downs come from out of state. It's only an hour and a half to Atlantic City from here. A lot of folks will not be coming back.

It's going to be interesting to see the numbers from restaurants for Thanksgiving dinner this week. One restaurant owner I spoke with last week told me that his reservations for Thanksgiving are down almost 75% from last year. Yet the President of the local Elks lodge told me they had to stop taking reservations in October. Smoking is permitted at the Elks when they are holding fund raising activities - their Thanksgiving dinner has always been a charitable event.

Glantz' own words can and will be used against him here!!!!!

His words: That's what happens everywhere.

Expect stories about restaurant and bar business tanking.
Yes stan, because "That's what happens everywhere. "

Expect stories of smokers defying the law. Expect stories of waiters and waitresses being thrown out of work.
Yes, Stan, because "That's what happens everywhere. "

Expect predictions that tax revenues will be down by millions of dollars.
Yes, stan, because "That's what happens everywhere. "

Expect demands to water down the law by installing costly ventilation systems as the solution to indoor smoke pollution.

Stan, darling - those things have already been installed in most places in Delaware - and have been working perfectly for 10 years now.

The antis are descending upon Delaware enmasse from everywhere on tuesday or wednesday to tout how good this is going to be for Delaware. What they will fail to tell anyone is that the only people this is good for are those who need the government to be their mommies and daddies because they are too inept to be able to explain to a business owner they would prefer a smoke-free environment. They will also fail to let anyone know that they are only interested in behavior modification by government edict. They will also fail to tell anyone they approve of violating property rights. and finally they will fail to mention that they only believe in property rights and choice of the property owners when it comes to providing abortions and illicit sexual relations between anyone.

That's what happens everywhere.
